You may still be waiting for life to settle down.
After this project. After the children need less. After the family situation is resolved. After the week when dinner somehow decides itself.
I do this too. I imagine a calmer version of life waiting just ahead, then another responsibility arrives and takes the empty chair.
A friend in her fifties said something to me recently that I have kept thinking about. As life moves forward, she said, responsibility often increases. Things are never quite like before.
My first reaction was not exactly delight. Like many of us, I have been quietly hoping for the week when everyone sleeps well, nothing breaks and the calendar becomes considerate. That week has not introduced itself yet.
But the more I thought about what she said, the less it sounded like bad news.
Life does not only add work. It adds people we love, work that matters, homes, friendships and histories. A fuller life can ask more of us because it also holds more.
The difficult part is that we often keep measuring this life against an earlier one. We compare how much time we had, how easily plans came together or how naturally we made room for the things we enjoyed. When the present does not fit that old shape, it can feel as though we are doing something wrong.
Maybe you are not failing to get your old life back. Maybe your life has changed, and what matters to you needs a new way to belong in it.
I used to think that if I could not give something the same time or energy I once did, it barely counted. That made the small openings easy to miss. I could spend so long wishing for an uninterrupted afternoon that I did not notice the twenty quiet minutes already in front of me.
Those twenty minutes are not always the same as an afternoon. But they can still hold something real.
A friendship may look like a planned walk instead of an open-ended evening. Curiosity may return through the book beside your bed. Rest may be twenty quiet minutes without using them to catch up. You might call the friend who remembers who you are when all you can see is what needs to be done.
This is not about pretending that less time is always enough or that every full season is easy. It is about letting what matters meet you where you are, instead of making it wait for a life that may no longer look the same.
So before this week closes, think of one thing you miss. Not only the activity, but the way it made you feel. Connected. Curious. Rested. Creative. A little more like yourself.
Then ask:
One clear move for this week
What could that feeling look like in the life I have now?
Maybe the answer is a walk already placed on the calendar, the book moved from the shelf to your bedside, or a message sent before you can overthink the wording. Choose one answer and let it become your clear move for the week.
You do not need to redesign your life tonight. You do not need to finish everything first. Just let one thing that matters have a place before the week fills itself.
Life may stay full. It can still feel like yours.
One clear move at a time,
Meagan
